60mph Speed Limit to be Trialed

Shortly, four motorways that have seen higher than recommended levels of nitrogen dioxide, will see speed limits reduced in a trial to reduce pollution. The trial will take place on stretches of nearly five miles at:

  1. M6 junctions 6 to 7 by Witton,
  2. M1 junctions 33 to 34 by Rotherham,
  3. M602 junctions 1 to 3 by Eccles and
  4. M5 1 to 2 by Oldbury.

In time of increasing pressures on people to ‘get things done yesterday’, with too few hours in the day, ‘sometimes I think progress progresses too fast!’*

At 60mph, you are travelling a mile every minute, that’s 1,760 yards (about 1,600 meters – in ‘new money’) or almost 30 yards (27m) each second. Is that really not fast enough?

Or, to put it another way, at 60mph, you travel 10 miles less in an hour than at 70mph – your 70-mile journey takes you an extra 10 minutes … if you speed, you effectively risk points and a £100 fine … 10 minutes vs. £100?

In 2021, should you be one of the many that cause another’s death whilst speeding, you could face a jail sentence of ‘life’ – read more here.
